Releasenotes:
With this double album Battle of the Future Buddhas both continue the
softer old school journey with melodic and cool yet trippy music on one
side, and takes a few steps back to Twin Sharkfins territory and goes back
to the own roots with faster, darker and relentlessly psychedelic dance
stormers. We are literally going from the Edge of the Void, to the Apex
and To Hell and it's really a Strange Fantasy all in all.
Each CD has it's distinct own journey, the first slowly and carefully
building up to a peak and the other one just going on the Attack right
away. It is not really morning and night music, as there is melancholia
and some darkness, but always melodic, so it's more a dawn and a dusk
side. But there is a great range of different tracks, from the melodic and
powerfully uplifting Magneto to the dark almost industrial even death
metal like landscape of Evermore.
The production on the dawn side is kind of low and careful and it is mixed
low, with lots of room for melodies to evolve on their own, undisturbed by
hectic or chaotic sounds, or a too powerful kick or bass. All basslines
are funky and unique by the way, usually with delays making them float and
groove around. There are some faster and more energetic pieces aimed for
the dance floor as well.
The dusk side is mixed loud, with sounds trying to be heard over the
general mayhem and conquering their own frequency. Tracks are generally
faster, more intense and definitely very psychedelic, yet melodic. Night
music can for sure have melodies and every track has its own
interpretation of melodies. Overall this CD is aimed at the most intense
peaks on the dance floor, but there are no machine gun basslines.*
No compression is used in the production, except to master the tracks. But
not as a tool to get the kick and the bass to give more oomph. This allows
for the rest of the sounds, the melodies, to dominate and tell a story,
instead of being yet another empty sound quality focused production. Sound
quality might mean chosing the right sound to tell a story, not just
having perfectly spectralized waves and frequencies.
As usual in the 2000s it's David who is making the most of the
productions, but Johan has co-created Centurion and has provided feedback
and added rhythms and other sounds on Broken Bass and Flumerider as well.
